Pleasing Pink

Ruth's Reflections

Among all the white snowdrops and narcissi it’s good to see a splash of pink.

Cyclamen Cyclamen

This cyclamen has a dozen flowers and is a cheerful sight just outside the back door.  Traditionally cyclamen symbolised goodbye.  This one farewells me when I leave the house, and also greets me when I return.

According to Jewish legend King Solomon chose the cyclamen as the model for his crown.  Hundreds of years later, when Jerusalem was conquered by the enemy the royal crown was stolen from the king’s treasury. The cyclamen bowed its head in sorrow and said “Only when a son of David again ascends the throne and the crown is returned to Jerusalem shall I once more stand erect”.   That is why the cyclamen still droops its head.

“This cyclamen’s a cheery sight
beside the path, all pink and bright.”
