Endless security lines. Expensive tickets. Long delays. Air travel is a world of potential headaches. But thanks to mobile technology, your flying experience can be less turbulent. Here are some top air travel tips to get you through your journey.

Book the flight with an app

Book your flight from your smartphone or tablet—a great option in case you need to make last-minute changes. Travel-booking app KAYAK collects pricing information from airlines and third-party booking sites to ensure you get the cheapest tickets.

The Hipmunk Flight Search app shows the optimal time for booking flights at the cheapest prices. It also displays updated layover times and airport-terminal information.

Once you’ve booked your flight, download your airline’s app so you can display your boarding pass on your mobile device. No need to dig the hard copy out of your bag. Just show the pass on your phone’s screen to the airline employee and you’ll be on your way.

Stay updated on your flight’s status

With travel apps such as FlightAware, FlightTrack 5 and SeatGuru, you’ll get updates on weather, gate changes, flight status and more. It’s a convenient way to stay informed.

Meet your seatmate

Wouldn’t it be great if you knew the person seated next to you shared your interests, especially on a long flight? Some airlines let passengers choose seatmates based on business and social-networking profiles.

KLM’s Meet & Seat program, for example, lets you view others’ Facebook®, Google+™ or LinkedIn profiles to see where they’ll be sitting. You can then pick a seat next to someone with similar tastes.

Accessorize, sit back and relax

You’ve finally found your seat on the plane. Now what? If the in-flight movie choices aren’t your cup of tea, but there’s Wi-Fi on your flight, you can use a video-streaming app on your smartphone or tablet to select from hundreds of movies and TV shows.

Listening to your favorite songs or podcasts can also make a flight more relaxing. Use a music app or download a podcast and use a pair of travel-friendly headphones to tune out any distractions. Great options include Beats Solo™2 On-Ear Headphones, LG TONE INFINIM™ wireless headset, and Powerbeats2™ Wireless earphones.

And perhaps most important, keep your devices charged—especially if you’re on a long flight. Just bring along a battery pack like the mophie powerstation® duo XL, which is small enough to slip in your carry-on, so you can charge your devices right from your seat.
