(NBC News) Doctors and nurses at the National Institutes of Health are fighting to save the life of an American infected with Ebola now in critical condition.

The patient is a clinician with the non-profit “Partners in Health” and had been volunteering at an Ebola treatment unit in Sierra Leone.

One of the people who treated the American patient while in Africa is in the bio-containment unit at Nebraska Medicine. That person developed some symptoms but has not tested positive for Ebola and is said to be doing well.

Several others who were exposed are in self-quarantine.

The virus continues to spread in Guinea and Sierra Leone, but Liberia has not reported any new ebola cases in a week.

“There’s no doubt the epidemic has peaked and is declining slowly,” says Dr. Phil Smith of Nebraska Medicine, “but this incident is a reminder that it’s not over.”
